To Draw

First light—one eye open, half asleep—I pondered the word: "draw".

To draw.

To draw strength from something. To be strengthened, comforted. To be filled where there is emptiness, no-power, sadness or fear.

Our eyes are always searching—seeking someone or something to draw from. Like water for thirst. Like food for hunger.

We draw strength, value, esteem or admiration from many things:

Our image, our car, our home, our garden, our work, our knowledge and
from a post, a picture, a quote, a slogan, a meme, a video, a podcast, a book, a blog…Even from an influencer, a celebrity, or a spouse.

We draw energy from this or these things, hoping they’ll make us feel strong, give us solutions or more value, keep us in control, or peace.

Then the woman at the well came to mind—John 4—and her words:
"Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep..."

She didn’t yet know. But He knew.

He knew all the other wells she’d drawn from.
He knew every pit, trench, pothole, and shallow place she had dipped into, seeking strength, value, esteem, happiness or peace. He saw her deep need to be filled.

He spoke of her five past partners—not to shame her, but to show that He knew.

And when she realized who He was, she told everyone:
"Come, meet the One who told me everything I ever did!"
The One who knows all my wells.

God made us in His image—to draw from Him.
He knows we were created with emptiness:
Empty hearts. Empty minds. Empty of value. Empty esteem. Bare, hollow, vacant, powerless —ready to be filled.

My beautiful,

You were made to draw from something.
But please, do not draw from the wrong well.
Those wells pull you in and drown you.

Our King is the true well.
And He promises that if we draw from Him, we will draw living, overflowing water.

Part of my 1,040-year plan is:
To draw from the correct well—whenever I’m thirsty.
