Grounded Campers
You’ve probably heard of the natural living movement that advocates walking barefoot, also known as "grounding" or "earthing."
The rationale is that by making direct contact with the earth’s surface, we can tap into its natural energy and electrons, which can offer a variety of health benefits, Dylan, our Methodist Church reverend, opened up our bible study discussion.
"Oh what nonsense" someone directed us to Paul's liberating insights on idolizing and worshiping "the creation" instead of our Creator.
Getting back to the theme of our study: “On Holy Ground,” and understanding the idea of being in God’s presence with bare feet, Dylan analyzed the path Moses must have walked as a shepherd, day in and day out. He then paused and asked: “Do you think the burning bush was burning for a long time, or just the day Moses happened to pass by?” (Exodus 3).
This was something none of us had considered before. We concluded that it was possible that the bush could have been burning for a long time, but because of Moses’ busy life, his challenges, and his focus on other things, he might have missed it day after day... until one day, he noticed.
Dylan then took us to the moment when God told Moses that the ground Moses was standing on, was holy.
Revealing that wherever God's presence is, there is holiness and holy ground and since God's Spirit covers the entire earth, every step we take, is actually, on holy soil...
Before wrapping up our bible study, Dylan left us with a few questions: "How many burning bushes do I walk past on a daily basis? What can I do to turn aside and meet with Jesus?"
He also left us with a prayer and I'm sharing the part of the Ignatian prayer:
On our eternal trip with You as our Camp Leader, King Jesus,
Suddenly the most mundane tasks are infused with sacred meaning.
Suddenly the campers in our lives, especially those we find difficult, merit a deeper look and more patient consideration of the ways in which You are reaching out to us through them.
Yet, so often it feels like we're completely out of touch with this sense of wonder, we're just going through the motions of getting through another dreary day in the tedious monotony of a lackluster life that's lost its spark.
As so we're bold to ask You to sneak up on us unawares, like a playful child, and surprise us today with Your presence, jumping into our midst with the invitation to share in the joyful life that is Yours.
In your loving and life-giving Name we pray. Amen
